Introducing Solstice to Technology Managers and Administrators

Configurable. Scalable. Manageable.

Solstice is highly configurable, scalable, and manageable to support organizations and deployments of every size. The solution is designed to be deployed on existing IT networks and exposes all the configuration and security capabilities required to comply with even the strictest IT security policies. Mersive provides many resources and support for Solstice admins to make sure their deployment is successful from the initial install through lifetime management.

Solstice Topology

Solstice Components

Solstice was designed to support deployments ranging from a few meeting spaces to global rollouts of thousands of displays.  By focusing on straightforward deployment and management capabilities Solstice has become as valuable to IT/AV managers as it is to end-users who want better meetings.  Several Solstice components work together with your existing network infrastructure to create a secure, stable and maintainable network of collaborative displays.

User Apps

The apps can be pre-installed and configured for your users using our SCCM-based clients. The user app for laptop users will also be served to users directly from the Pod itself on first use.

The Solstice Pod

The Pod is deployed directly utilizing existing network infrastructure and has options to support both Ethernet and wireless networks.  The Pod will support enterprise network authentication models including 802.1X and can be updated with your own security certificate.  As long as your network supports TCP/IP traffic over a few communications ports between the client software and the Pod, we’ll take care of the rest.  This means you can deploy Pods within various VLANs, or anywhere that contains a route to your users.

The Solstice Dashboard

The centralized Solstice Dashboard can be downloaded and installed to an on-premise Windows server or on laptops to allow your technology managers to access Solstice management settings from anywhere on the network.  Over 100 different configuration and customization settings are available, and because the Dashboard is a one-to-many management tool you can change settings, update software, and customize user experience for an entire fleet of Pods at once.

Solstice Discovery Service

This service allows users to easily discover and connect to any Solstice display. Solstice Discovery Service (SDS) is a small Windows service that can be deployed on the same server hosting the centralized dashboard or, if you want to segment discovery of displays, multiple SDS instances can be installed at various locations.   Simply install SDS on a machine, and either modify your DNS server to respond to client and Pod queries or add the SDS IP Address that you’re using in the configuration settings in Solstice Dashboard.

Network Deployment Considerations

The Solstice Pod is a network-attached devices with two network interface cards (NICs) may securely attach to a wired and wireless network simultaneously using separate NICs.  Typically, the Pod is connected to the main network using an Ethernet cable, and attached to a guest network wirelessly.  The Pod also has a wireless access point (WAP) that may be enabled to allow guest users to collaborate with those connected to the main network in environments where a guest network does not exist.

For details on all connectivity options, host network considerations, and a master network port diagram, see the Network Deployment Guide

Wired Ethernet Connection Recommended

Mersive recommends attaching the Pod to the primary user network via Ethernet, so it is best practice to ensure each deployment location includes an Ethernet jack for the Pod. Attaching the Pod via Ethernet streamlines the initial network deployment, and improves security and performance.

Wireless Connectivity Options

The Pod’s wireless network card allows it to be attached to a secondary user network (such as a guest network) wirelessly when applicable. The Pod can also be attached to the primary network wirelessly when a wired Ethernet connection is not feasible.

Other Network Considerations

Solstice features many other network configuration settings, management capabilities, and security and performance options. Check out the resources below for more information on these and other network considerations.

Security

Security

The Pod has been deployed on some of the most secure networks in the world, and has always been designed with security at top of mind.  No 3rd party apps may be installed on a Pod, all commands are compared to a whitelist prior to execution, and Mersive conducts 3rd party penetration testing annually. However, any network attached device can be vulnerable to user and network security breaches when improperly configured.

Prior to deploying in a security-sensitive environment, we recommend reading our Baseline Security Standard

Discovery

Discovery

An important part of any Solstice deployment is setting up discovery. End users can always connect to a Solstice-enabled display by typing in an IP address on their device, but most administrators choose to use a discovery method so users can see available displays right in their app and simply click on a display name to connect. Small and relatively flat networks that allow broadcast traffic can simply enable leave ‘broadcast’ enabled for all devices. Larger networks that do not forward broadcast packets may use the Solstice Discovery Service (SDS), a free, lightweight software that runs on a computer on the same network as the Solstice hosts and enables click-to-connect functionality for users.

Management

Management

The Solstice Dashboard is a free software that may be installed on one or more computer(s) on the same network as your Enterprise Edition Solstice Pods or Windows Software host PCs. The Dashboard provides additional configuration options not available through the local configuration panel, and lets an administrator apply changes to multiple Solstice endpoints at once.

For a guide to everything the Dashboard can do for your deployment, please see the Dashboard User Guide.
